Frequently Asked Question

Are My Solar Panels Working Effectively?
Last Updated 6 days ago

Once your solar PV system is installed, it’s only natural to want reassurance that it’s working efficiently and delivering the benefits you expected. At SolarTherm UK, we believe in empowering our customers with the knowledge they need to understand and get the most from their solar system.

Here’s a simple checklist you can follow to monitor your system and ensure it’s working at optimal levels.

1. Check Your Generation Meter

Your solar generation meter displays how much electricity your system has produced. You should see a reading in kilowatt-hours (kWh) — and this number should steadily increase throughout the day when the sun is out.

Look for the indicator light:

  • A flashing light typically means the system is actively generating electricity.
  • The faster it flashes, the more power it’s producing.

If the light stays constantly lit or off during daylight, it may indicate a problem, and it’s worth giving our team a call to investigate.

2. Monitor Your Electricity Bill

While not the most precise method, unexpected increases in your electricity bill without a clear change in your energy habits could point to reduced solar performance.

If your system is working properly, you should notice a decrease in your energy consumption from the grid, which would be reflected in lower electricity costs.

3. Use Your Solar Monitoring App

If your solar system includes a monitoring app, this is the most convenient way to track your system’s performance in real time. These apps allow you to:

  • Check daily and historical energy generation
  • Receive performance alerts or faults
  • Monitor energy usage vs. production

Our team at SolarTherm UK always helps customers set up compatible apps and dashboards during installation — so you’re always in control of your energy data.

4. Consider the Weather

Sometimes, it’s just the weather! Even on cloudy or rainy days, your panels still generate electricity — typically between 10% and 25% of their usual output. So don’t worry if you see a temporary dip in performance when the sun hides away.

Still Unsure? We’re Here to Help

If you’ve run through these checks and your system still doesn’t seem to be performing as expected, submit a support ticket. At SolarTherm UK, our technical team is always happy to run diagnostics and investigate any issues. Whether it’s a drop in performance or a simple system reset, we’ll help you maximise your solar output.
